“Let the little children come unto me.” – Luke 18:16
Kathleen Mary Cook was born and raised in San Jose. She started school at St. Joseph Parish, downtown then transferred to St. Martin of Tours for 2nd to 8th grade. For high school she attended Mother Butler Memorial. After starting at West Valley College, Ms. Cook earned a BA and Teaching Credential from San Jose State University. She did her student teaching in Pueblo, Mexico. Returning to Santa Clara County, she taught for seven years in Oak Grove School District before joining St. John Vianney School in 1978. She retired from our parish school in 2014 and became a volunteer parish staff member almost immediately.
Kathy has been a member of St. John Vianney Parish for years and she enjoys golf, playing as part of a Ladies Golf Team. She has one son and a wonderful daughter-in-law along with one precious grandson. She loves children and has been teaching religious education since she was ten years old!
Director of Religious Education
The St. John Vianney Religious Education program that Ms. Cook leads teaches about 160 children from Preschool to 8th grade. (She also supervises sacramental preparation for high school youth who also participate in the regular Youth Ministry Program.) Much of what Kathy does now is training and supporting the many volunteers who do the actual teaching. One of her greatest joys is working with volunteer she once taught when they were children. Volunteer teachers and aides are always welcome. Training, frequently one-on-one, is offered whenever needed.
The Religious Education program meets on Thursday evenings, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM in the parish school. Children can join the program at any time during the year, but the sacramental preparation program usually starts in September, so children arriving later may have to wait until the next Fall to start preparation for Baptism or First Holy Communion. Parents dropping their children off for class are encouraged to take part in Adult Education opportunities offered at the same time.
For the summer of 2015, and hopefully in the future, St. John Vianney Parish offered a Summer Literacy Program with support from the City of San Jose. This is not a Religious Education Program, but rather a way to keep children learning during the summer. The program served about 160 children, four days a week from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and was very well received by the children and the whole community. Many of the volunteer teachers and aides were former students of Ms. Cook. She helped organize several field trips including a trip to Roaring Camp and a trip to see the movie “Inside Out”.
Received the Pius X Award this year for 40 years of Catechetical Service Kathleen Mary Cook has volunteered as a Catechist for 40 years at St. Martin of Tours, Transfiguration, St. Lucy’s, St. Frances Cabrini and St. John Vianney Parishes. She currently is volunteering at St. John Vianney Parish as the Director of Religious Education. Her mother and father, coupled with the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary and Sisters of the Presentation, instilled and inspired her to become a woman of faith. She enthusiastically shares her love of Jesus and dedication to Mary to all those she encounters.
