There’s lots to be done to make this event run smoothly. Duties include the following:
·Category: Intake
o Evening Host Leader (daily: on-site, evening)
o Evening Host Volunteer (daily: on-site, evening)
Category: Overnight
o Overnight Hosts – divided into two, 4-hour shifts (daily: on-site, night)
Category: Meals
o Dinner & Lunch Prep
§ Dinner Host (daily: off-site, evening)
o Breakfast
§ Morning Host (daily: on-site, morning)
§ Breakfast Volunteer/Server (daily: on-site, morning)
·Category: Other
o Laundry Volunteers (Tues; Thurs: off-site, daytime)
o Initial Set Up: Cots and Lockers (one time only, on-site)
o Final Clean Up: Cots and Lockers (one time only, on-site)
We generally recommend that you volunteer within a single category. If possible, please do so with some regularity (e.g. same shift every Monday, same shift for several days within a given week) to reduce coordination and training workload; however, if you can’t do this, we’ll still be happy to have you!
Our Volunteer SignUp has a detailed list of all the slots that need filling.
Volunteer Requirements
Volunteers should be at least 18 years of age. New volunteers are expected to attend an in-person orientation/training session at St. John Vianney. We require that all volunteers attend our training. If you have attended the training before, we recommend that you attend as a refresher course as the general training does remind us of the special circumstances of our guests. We will have a orientation/training session on July 24th, and add additional date(s) before the program begins if needed.
Furthermore, in the interest of guest safety, the Diocese of San Jose requires that new on-site volunteers do all of the following (this does NOT include off-site volunteers such as Laundry Volunteers):
1. Have fingerprints on file with the Diocese
2. Complete the online “PGC & Vulnerable Adults” diocese training. To take the training, go the https://www.virtusonline.org site and create an account. Volunteers must retake the (brief) online course if 3 years have elapsed.
3. Be checked against the Megan’s Law List
Don’t worry – we will help you accomplish the above. For instance, fingerprinting will be available at the first orientation on July 24th, and instructions for being fingerprinted at alternate locations/times will be provided.
